April 23, declared as 'Children's Festival' by Atatürk became not only a festival celebrated by Turks, but also the children all around the world for 90 years.
We are celebrating the 90th year of April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day which was given to the children of the world by the Great Leader Atatürk with great joy and pride.
April 23, 1920 was the day our Turkish Grand National Assembly gathered for the first time, establishing the foundation of our new state. April 23 is the day when the nation started to use its power to govern; that is, our National Sovereignty day. The date when Turkish Grand National Assembly was founded started to be celebrated as the day of National Sovereignty after the first year. In the year 1929, Turkish association for protection of children declared 23-30 April as the Children's week and the first day of the week as the Children's day. These two days were united under the name April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day on 23 April 1935.
Turkish Radio and Television Institution (TRT) started celebrating April 23 Children's Day as April 23 Children's Festival by moving it to international arena after UNESCO declared the year 1979 as the Children's Year.
Atatürk, who always stressed that the future is in the hands of the children with the words "today's children are tomorrow's grown-ups" thus presented a festival to Turkish children. This is the only children's festival in the world.
Atatürk stressed the importance he assigned to the young people with his words "We established the republic, but it is the youngsters and the children who will keep it alive."

Ulu Önder Atatürk'ün dünya çocuklarına armağan etti 23 Nisan Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk Bayramı'nın 90. yılını büyük bir sevinç ve gururla kutluyoruz.
23 Nisan 1920, Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisimizin ilk toplandığı, yeni devletimizin temelinin atıldığı gündür. 23 Nisan, ulusun yönetme yetkisini kullanmaya başladığı gündür; yani Milli Egemenlik Bayramımızdır. TBMM kurulduğu tarih birinci yılından sonra Hakimiyet-i Milliye bayramı olarak kutlanmaya başlanmıştır. Himaye-i Etfal Cemiyeti'nin (Sosyal Hizmetler ve Çocuk Kurumu) 1929 yılında 23-30 Nisan'ı Çocuk Haftası ve haftanın ilk gününün de çocuk bayramı ilan edilmesiyle birlikte kutlanmaya başlanır. Bu iki bayram, 23 Nisan 1935 yılında 23 Nisan Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk Bayramı adı altında bir araya getirilmiştir.
Türkiye Radyo Televizyon Kurumu (TRT), UNESCO'nun 1979'u Çocuk Yılı olarak duyurmasının ardından, 23 Nisan Çocuk Bayramını uluslararası düzeye taşıyarak 23 Nisan Çocuk Şenliği olarak kutlanmasına başlanmıştır.
"Bugünün küçükleri yarının büyükleri" diyerek geleceğin, çocukların elinde olduğunu her fırsatta belirten, çocukları geleceğimizin teminatı olarak gören Atatürk, Türk çocuklarına böylece bir bayram hediye etmiştir. Bu bayram dünyanın tek çocuk bayramıdır.
Atatürk, "Cumhuriyeti biz kurduk, onu yaşatacak olan gençlerdir, çocuklardır" diyerek gençlere verdiğ önemin altını çizmiştir.

Atatürk, 1922'de Bursa'da çocuklara şöyle seslenmişti:
Küçük hanımlar, küçük beyler...
Sizler hepiniz, geleceğin bir gülü,
yıldızı, bir bahtının aydınlığısınız.
Memleketi asıl aydınlığa gark
edecek sizsiniz. Kendinizin ne
kadar önemli, kıymetli olduğunuzu
düşünerek ona göre çalışınız.
